Company Goes Green
Applied Materials is committed to environmental stewardship—in the products and services it delivers to customers and as a leader in the community. At sites in both California and Texas, Applied has gone "green".
At its headquarters in Santa Clara, CA, participation in the Santa Clara Green Power Initiative is expected to prevent the release of more than 2.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Applied has agreed to purchase 2,279 megawatt-hours of green power which will be generated from 100 percent clean wind and solar power. According to the City of Santa Clara, this investment is the largest clean power commitment to date in the city's program.
Also, by joining Austin Energy's Greenchoice program, the company reduces its dependence on power generated by conventional means, such as coal-burning or nuclear generation plants, and commits to purchase 10.8 million kilowatts of wind-generated electricity each year for the next 10 yeas. According to Austin’s electric utility, Applied's investment in wind power is expected to have an impact on local air quality that is tantamount to planting 38,523 new trees (or 1,926 acres of new forest) or removing 1,865 cars from Austin's busy roadways.
